District 6 is proud to announce the recipient of our 2014 Spring Convention “Communication and Leadership Award” on May 3, 2014 as Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé L. Harteau.

We chose Janeé for her service and leadership as Chief of Police in the community extending statewide ensuring our safety. Janeé, the first female police chief for the city, worked her way up through the ranks and acts on her belief of setting people up for success.  Her key values are commitment, integrity, and transparency.

Janeé became the 52nd and first female Police Chief for Minneapolis in 2012, previously appointed as Assistant Chief in 2010.  Prior to this appointment she was Deputy Chief of the Patrol Bureau where she was responsible for all Minneapolis Police Department 911 response personnel and the department’s emergency services units. She began her service in 1987 as a patrol officer working the Third and Fourth Precincts and was then promoted to the rank of lieutenant and commanded the Crime Lab, and Licensing Unit.

Chief Harteau, who grew up in Duluth, MN, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Police Science and a Master  of Arts in Public Safety Administration; both from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. She is a graduate of the Senior Management Institute of Police in Boston, MA and the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety’s Police staff and Command School where she was the Franklin M. Kreml Leadership Award winner in 2005. This award is given to “recognize and encourage the high ethical and professional values and dedication to public service” named after the center’s founder.

Janeé is an active member of the Major Cities Chief’s Association (MCCA) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).  In addition, Chief Harteau serves as a member of various  boards of Directors including the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), a national law enforcement think-tank based in Washington DC, the YWCA of Minneapolis, Youthlink-a non-profit that serves homeless youth, and Cornerhouse-who provides resources for and assesses suspected child sexual abuse victims.
